Frank Turner

It was 574 days ago that we were randomly introduced to Frank Turner via Mike Davies of BBC Radio 1 He was filling in for on Indie 103.1‘s Passport Approved radio show in Los Angeles as the show’s host Sat Bisla was out of town.  One of the songs that Mike played was Frank Turner’s “The Real Damage” and ever since then we have been hooked.

Frank Turner, sometimes known as Franky Pants, is a modern day Bob Dylan with a Black Flag/Billy Bragg twist.  Born in Muharraq, Bahrain and raised in Winchester England, Frank is now setting his sites on taking over the planet, one gig at a time.  Being only 27 years old, he writes songs as if he were 60.  Unlike most singer songwriters who pretend to know what’s current and what happened in the past, Frank earned a degree in history from the London School of Economics after being educated at Eton College where he had earned a scholarship.  Over the past couple of years we have had a front row seat that confirms he is currently working on a master’s degree in rocking the f*ck out.

In previous lives Frank Turner was the frontman for  a hardcore punk band called Million Dead and prior to that the frontman for an emo band called Kneejerk.  This gave him the experience and stamina needed to gig day-in and day-out without fail.  It also gave us even more reason to appreciate Frank as a solo artist, anyone who can live through gigging that much and STILL be able to sing a ballad must have been put on this earth for a purpose far greater than banging heads and growing your hair long.

Posted above is a quick clip of what Frank Turner is up to now, this is a world premiere of his brand new song (insert name here) that we are absolutely in love with, too bad we only caught half on video!  This was recorded Thursday March 26, 2009 at the world famous Viper Room in Los Angeles.  We have watched Frank’s shows  grow in America from just a (small) handful of people to filling up the aforementioned venue with kids spastically singing the words to all of his songs, almost verbatim.

With all seriousness, we feel that Frank is one of the best solo artists of our generation.  His lyrics are poignant and will prove to stand the test of time.  The growth from his debut album Sleep Is For The Week, to his follow up Love, Ire & Song is absolutely astonishing.  While he started out writing songs like “Heartless Bastard Motherf*cker” and “Thatcher F*cked The Kids”, he now writes songs about death that will change your life.  While you watch that, we will patiently wait for the release of his 3rd album and of course let you know as soon as we get our grubby paws on it.

In the meantime, do yourself a favor and visit Frank’s website and buy all of his albums.  They come with a 30 day money-back guarantee  for the first 5 albums sold.  Restrictions apply, not available in all areas, offer not valid on days that end with “y”. Rock on.

respect: Frank gives back
sample of lyrics for live video: …because the only thing that punk rock should ever really mean is not sitting around and waiting for the lights to go green…there’s no such things as rock stars there’s just people who make music; some of them are just like us and some of them are dicks. // Cause we write love songs in C and we do politics in G and we sing songs about our friends in E Minor
